Our commitment

Cosmetics save the Ocean is committed to conducting research and development in biopolymers and their possible applications in everyday products. In particular, the Cosmetics Save the Ocean project incorporates all the studies that aim to create a portfolio of innovative and ocean friendly products.

The negative impact that cosmetics products can have on the oceanic ecosystem is as urgent as it is complex: many recent studies have proven that the ingredients used in formulations lead to ecotoxicity and bioaccumulation. In a bid to develop the cosmetics of the future, with sustainable and effective formulas and responsible production,

Cosmetics Save the Ocean welcomes and supports research projects regarding marine environmental concerns and conducted by research teams at national and international universities, public and private foundations and initiatives aimed at raising awareness of marine pollution with a focus on the impact of plastics.

The POWDER BOUTIQUE

Our researchers, just like the best tailors, try to achieve the best solution to meet the needs of their most exacting clients.
With the first results produced by our researchers, Bio-on/CNS cements its commitment to cosmetics with a patented innovation, Minerv® Bio Cosmetics, powders made from PHB (polyhydroxybutyrate) biopolymer, which is super-sustainable and guarantees an excellent performance in cosmetics formulations: 100% biobased, biodegradable, biocompatible, GMO free and organic solvent free. Minerv® Bio Cosmetics products are an ecological solution to the conventional microplastics used in beauty and personal care products, which are the subject of much debate as they are accused of causing harm to the environment and, consequently, human health. The new product sacrifices none of the sensory experience, texture or effectiveness of conventional products. Minerv® Bio Cosmetics is a green alternative to PE (polyethylene), PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate), Nylon, PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PP (polypropylene), styrene/acrylate copolymers, tribehenin, sorbitol/sebacic acid, behenate copolymers, and polystyrene.
Minerv® Bio Cosmetics biopolymers are biodegradable in water and do not therefore have an impact on the food chain.

SUNSCREEN LINE

Bio-on laboratories use the patented technology Minerv® Bio Cosmetics to create MinervPHB RIVIERA, a 100% natural ingredient that acts as an SPF booster. An SPF booster is an active ingredient that enables fewer UV filters to be used in sunscreen because it optimises their activity in the formula. MinervPHB RIVIERA particles act by light scattering, i.e. dispersing radiation more effectively, increasing the likelihood of their reaching the UV filters in the formula, which absorb, reflect or scatter radiation, thus protecting the skin. At the same SPF or protective performance level, sunscreen with SPF booster therefore requires fewer filters in the formula. And we know that UV filters are associated with a negative impact on coral, the natural habitat and food source for numerous algae and marine species.
This resulted in the MyKAI Sunscreen Lotion line: ultra-green formulas containing an Ocean Friendly filtering system that combines 100% mineral UV filters made from MinervPHB RIVIERA biopolymer, a 100% natural SPF Booster. MyKAI sunscreen lotions also contain no harmful microplastics. Microplastics are tiny plastic, non-biodegradable particles, usually oil-based, that are extremely persistent in the environment and are ingested by marine life, inevitably entering the food chain with potential repercussions for human health. Our formulas are also free from petroleum jelly, silicone polymers and colourants.

ORAL CARE LINE
Bio-on laboratories are exploiting the abrasive or cleaning properties of PHAs powder to work on applications for Minerv products in oral care. Many products in the sector use microplastics for deeper, more effective cleaning. Replacing them with a completely green solution would cut the environmental impact of these everyday products.

PERSONAL CARE LINE
Shower gel, shampoo and conditioner formulations often contain microplastics to provide a opalescent appearance and a more sensory experience. Our researchers are aiming to develop green alternatives that guarantee high performance whilst safeguarding the environment.

Recognitions

MinervPHA bioplastic has received the Certificate of Material Excellence in the "Naturals" category and has been included in the virtual library and displayed in New York at the Material ConneXion headquarters and its bricks and mortar bookshops around the world: in Bangkok, Bilbao, Daegu, Milan, Skövde and Tokyo. This is the world's largest tool for collecting and consulting innovative and sustainable materials and processes.

Certifications

NATRUE is an international not-for-profit association based in Brussels and aimed at promoting and protecting natural and organic cosmetics around the world. Founded in 2007, it brings together operators, businesses and products that are true friends of natural and organic, certifying cosmetics and cosmetics ingredients according to strict quality standards.
Given the seemingly arbitrary use of the "natural cosmetics" label, a definition of truly natural must be set down that is unequivocal and clear to all. The criteria proposed by NATRUE go beyond the simple definition of "natural cosmetics" used to date in Europe, adding coherence and transparency. Solely natural substances, or natural raw materials, comply with NATRUE requirements.

COSMOS-standard AISBL is a not-for-profit, international association set up in Belgium in 2010 to manage and develop a new international standard for organic and natural cosmetics. The project was founded by the five main European organisations involved with organic and natural cosmetics standards, which came together to harmonise the respective standards. These standards are used by over 1600 businesses, which produce and sell over 25000 products in over 45 countries around the world, representing approximately 85% of the certified cosmetics market. It was therefore crucial to create a single international standard.

BioAgriCert is a monitoring and certification body founded in 1984. In 1993 it was recognised by the Ministry of Agricultural Policy as the national body authorised to monitor and certify organic production. The BioAgriCert trademark provides consumers with a guarantee of a safe and high-quality product in line with the strictest European and international standards. BioAgriCert therefore certifies organic and natural cosmetics products. The main requirements for cosmetic certifications include strict standards on:

  • Production processes
  • Packaging
  • Raw materials
  • Cleaning procedures
  • Compliance with good manufacturing practice

"OK Biodegradable Water" certification was granted to Bio-on's MinervPHA bioplastic in 2008. This important recognition was attributed by Belgian body Vinçotte, one of the world's most important and authoritative certifying bodies, thus confirming the complete biodegradability of MinervPHA in water at ambient temperature.
The MinervPHA biopolymer, made through technologies owned by Bio-on using agricultural and agro-industrial waste and by-products as raw materials, was the first in the world to obtain such certification. Products certified OK Biodegradable guarantee natural (unforced) biodegradation in a natural freshwater environment and thus make a substantial contribution towards reducing litter in rivers, lakes and seas. Biodegradation occurs through the action of bacteria colonies naturally present in all environments: the microorganisms attack the material, breaking it down and leaving no trace in the environment. The bacteria colonies and their concentrations differ depending on where biodegradation takes place (specific temperature, humidity, pH, oxygen, etc.).

The "BIOBASED PRODUCT" trademark and certification were assigned in 2014 to Bio-on's MinervPHA by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Bio-on's biopolymer was tested by an independent certified laboratory and was found to be a biobased material 100% originating from agricultural, forest or marine ingredients.
The USDA's BIOBASED PRODUCT certification verifies that the renewable and biobased ingredients meet or exceed the criteria laid down by the USDA itself. Based on the results obtained from these tests, consumers can be confident of the precise quantity of organic content in the product and can therefore make better-informed and more conscious purchasing decisions.
Through this voluntary labelling based on an initiative of the USDA's BioPreferred Programme, companies can request the certification of their products, the biobased origins of which are tested and verified according to ASTM standard D6866 by independent third parties using a transparent, efficient and analytical control method.
